A Hong Kong–Malaysia payment, step by step

Paper doorways with a visible gap between curving paper ribbons

A hypothetical business payment turns financial-cooperation news into practical questions about instructions, conversion, settlement and records.

01

The 6 October announcement: read the scope first

Information checked as of 11 October 2026. On 6 October, HKMA announced cooperation from the 2 October bilateral meeting: a stablecoin policy workstream, stronger RTGS connectivity and exploration of a CMU–RENTAS central securities depository link.

BNM separately describes established cooperative oversight of RENTAS–USD CHATS payment-versus-payment and delivery-versus-payment links.

02

A hypothetical payment: who gives the instruction?

This is a hypothetical scenario created by G70 to explain a verification process, not a client case. A Hong Kong family business is preparing to pay a Malaysian supplier. Its finance team has an invoice, contract and beneficiary bank details. Before sending an instruction, the team can compare the contractual payer, account holder and recipient. If another group company will pay, ask advisers to confirm the basis and accounting treatment.

Next, trace the instruction: who can create a beneficiary, change bank details or approve payment? We believe recording authority and checks helps the bank answer a specific question more effectively than judging suitability from a tool’s name alone. This is G70’s record-management approach, not a conclusion about statutory requirements in any jurisdiction.

03

Conversion and settlement: return to this transaction

Continuing the scenario, the supplier confirms its bank details and the business asks which currencies apply to the contract, conversion and final receipt. G70’s proposed questions are: when is the exchange rate fixed, who pays the fees, and how does the bank notify and respond if an instruction misses a cut-off or cannot be completed? Obtain written answers under the actual service terms.

If a new payment tool is proposed, also ask which entities may use it and what authority or restrictions apply. We do not interpret the cooperation directions as a new product being available to businesses or any stablecoin issuer having received a licence. Technical links, regulatory arrangements and customer eligibility need separate verification.

04

After payment: can another colleague follow the record?

In this scenario, the payer can keep the original instruction, authority record, conversion confirmation, bank correspondence and receipt confirmation in one case file. G70’s questions are whether another authorised colleague can understand who approved what and when, and which terms still lack written answers. This is a handover and checking method; a complete file does not eliminate transaction risk.

For subsequent cooperation, we will check for formal updates on participating institutions, eligible customers, currencies, operating rules and implementation. Exploration of a new CMU–RENTAS link should not be applied automatically to this hypothetical supplier payment. Unconfirmed terms should remain open questions. This article does not establish any business’s system access or recommend stablecoins or other financial products.
