Regulatory Developments

Fund rules are changing. Ask when redemption cash will arrive.

The SFC has published its retail fund consultation conclusions. Families can check derivatives, redemption arrangements and product implementation dates separately, without treating regulatory enhancements as a promise of lower risk.

months: transition for specified existing-fund requirements

01

7 October: what is changing?

As of 11 October 2026. On 7 October, the SFC confirmed changes concerning derivatives, liquidity and money market funds. Publication of the implementation direction does not mean every new requirement is already effective.

The conclusions tentatively schedule effectiveness for 1 November 2026. Existing funds have a 12-month transition for specified liquidity, money market fund and disclosure requirements, rather than every amendment.

02

Look beyond the label; ask about derivatives

The conclusions allow Value-at-Risk (VaR) as an alternative derivatives-management approach. Hong Kong-domiciled funds need prior SFC approval to adopt it; applicable conditions still matter.

If the question used to be only “Is this fund risky?”, make it more specific: are derivatives used to hedge, obtain exposure or implement another strategy? Ask an adviser to point to the product documents and explain what stressed conditions could do to net asset value. This is G70’s suggested review approach, not a fund risk rating.

VaR does not guarantee a maximum possible loss, and a product classification cannot replace understanding the strategy.

03

Redeemable—but in time for the payment?

Where a fund supports household spending, business funding or a known payment, compare the date cash is needed with dealing days, redemption notice, settlement and possible restrictions. A statement that a fund is redeemable may not explain when cash will arrive.

Ask what a manager can do when redemptions rise or underlying assets become harder to sell, who bears any related costs or adjustments, and whether the payment plan works if settlement takes longer than expected. These are general review questions, not an assessment of a particular fund or an individual allocation recommendation.

04

Use the latest product documents

Ask for answers tied to the latest offering document and key facts statement: where are derivative uses and risks disclosed, which scenarios are stress-tested, how can redemption restrictions or charges be triggered, and when does this product adopt the changes? Which requirements remain in transition?

G70 view: confirm the particular fund’s arrangements, document versions and change notices with its provider. This article relies on the conclusions and announcement we reviewed. It does not assume that supplementary guidance we have not checked has been published or that any individual product has completed its updates.

G70 will watch final commencement arrangements, supplementary guidance and product document updates. A regulatory change is a reason to review the details; it does not establish suitability for a family, better returns or protection of principal.
